What will my child be learning this year?

In Reading and Phonics, your child will learn set 2 and set 3 Read Write Inc sounds. They will read green words, red words, multisyllabic words and bring books home which are matched to their appropriate phonic level. Children will also answer questions based on what they have read.

In Writing, your child will learn how to use capital letters, full stops, question marks and exclamation marks through different genres of writing. They will apply their phonic knowledge to help them spell words phonetically and they will also learn different spelling rules such as adding ‘ed’ and ‘ing’ to a word. They will also learn how to form letters in a pre-cursive style and sit them correctly on the line. Your child will learn how to write basic sentences including all the above.

In Maths, your child will learn how to count forwards and backwards to 100 in jumps of 1, 2, 5 and 10. They will learn one more and one less than a number, partition and compare the value of numbers and write numbers accurately. They will learn how to add and subtract numbers to 20 using different practical and written methods and they will also solve missing number problems. They will learn to measure using standard and non-standard units, tell the time to half past and o’clock.

In Science, we will learn about animals including humans, everyday materials and plants. We also learn about seasonal changes across the year too.

Long Term Plan

When does my child have PE?

Tuesday and Thursday.
On these days, your child should come to school dressed in their PE kit and trainers. Please see the uniform page on our website (Click Here).

What should my child bring to school each day?

Your child needs to bring their bag, reading book, reading record and spelling book to school each day. They also need a filled water bottle and a coat, both with their name on. If sunny, your child should come to school with sun cream already applied and a sun hat. All stationery will be provided by school. Children do not need to bring any pens or pencils into school. Toys are not allowed to be brought into school from home.

What homework will my child get?

In Year 1, your child is expected to read at least 5 times a week and have their diary signed by an adult. They will be given spellings every Monday which they are expected to practise at home in their spelling book. Children will then be tested on their spellings the following Monday and their score will be recorded in their spelling book.

Why is reading so important?

The importance of reading for children cannot be underestimated. Reading for pleasure can benefit a child’s education, social and cognitive development, their wellbeing, and their mental health. Reading is the bedrock of all learning.

Our class author in Year 1 is Julia Donaldson. We will read a variety of her books throughout the year such as ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘The Gruffalo’.

Your child is expected to read at least 5 times a week at home for around 5-10 minutes. Reading books will be changed according to their phonic levels.

For more information about reading please visit our reading page on the school website (Click Here)

How will I receive updates and messages from school?

Staff are always available at the end of the day to answer any quick questions or queries. Class Dojo is used as the main lines of communication throughout school, so please make sure that you regularly check for messages and updates. You can send direct messages to your child's class teacher via class dojo, but please be mindful that staff are teaching, so they will not always be able to message back immediately.
